The Meishan Advantage: Why Heritage Pigs Matter

The Meishan Advantage
Most modern farming treats pigs like industrial units—bred for lean growth, rapid turnover, and maximum efficiency. At Swift Spring Hollow, we decided that path was the wrong one. Instead, we focused on the Meishan breed.
What are Meishan Pigs?
Meishans are one of the oldest heritage breeds in the world. They are not designed for the assembly line. Unlike industrial breeds, they are naturally docile, highly prolific, and have a remarkable ability to thrive on forage.
Why They Fit Our System
Our goal is a regenerative cycle. We don’t want a system that depletes the land; we want one that builds it. Meishans are essential to that because:
- Foraging Behavior: They integrate naturally into our silvopasture system. They manage the woodland undergrowth and enrich the soil simply by being pigs. It is a win-win: the pigs get the best nutrition, and the land gets better.
- Meat Quality: There is no comparison on flavor. Meishans produce a marbled, rich fat that is vastly superior to commercial pork. If you have only ever had industrial pork, the difference is immediate.
- Animal Welfare: Their docile nature allows us to maintain high welfare standards without the stress and aggression typical of intensive farming. They are content animals, and that shows in the quality of the product.
By prioritizing heritage genetics, we are doing more than just producing food. We are preserving a biological legacy that the industrial system has almost entirely erased. That is slower work, but it is the only work worth doing.
